Today we replaced our microwave, the only one we’ve ever owned. We purchased it in 1985, the second year of our marriage, when we were still students at BYU. In 27 years of service to our family it’s never given us one bit of trouble and cooked many a meal. It’s traveled with us all over the country and has been with us longer than our oldest child. Pretty impressive for a household appliance, however, we resisted the urge to play “Taps” or fire a 21-gun salute.
It was replaced today by a flashy new one that is 1/2 the size, 1/3 more powerful, and cost 1/5 what we paid for the original. But can it go the distance? If it does, there will only be one more microwave in our future. Wow!
Goodbye old friend!

I wish I could offer condolences, but the only thing I can truthfully say is, it’s about time!! Welcome to the 21st century! You’ll love it here.

Ha! I loved it! It reminded me of when we retired the brown-with-aqua interior refrigerator (freezer on the bottom, duct-taped shut to keep kids out of the popsicles) we had inherited from Grandpa and Grandma Carey. They got it when they moved to Ponca….1970 or 1971 (can’t remember) and offered it to us when we were moving to Utah – 1985. It gave up it’s cooling days in 1995 – not too long after we traveled to Texas. It was long out of style (although maybe would be back in now?) and I was sad to see it go. Also sad to say that the replacement fridge is still in the kitchen although it didn’t take long for the parts to start to crack and break…..ie lid for butter shelf long gone, bracket for veggie drawer cracked and gone, adjustable cold-air bracket for keeping the meet/cheese drawer colder taped on in non-adjustable position to prevent freezing…..
On the other hand, after owning the fridge for 16 years, we hooked up the ice maker and cold water……and have enjoyed that ever since!
Microwaves & refrigerators – one things for sure: you can’t live without ’em!
