I finally finished hand-sewing the binding on this scrap quilt. All four of us in my quilt group made one of these by sharing our scraps around to get it done. I made a smaller one than the others so mine is more baby size while theirs are throw size. It’s a rail fence variation so the pattern author decided it needed a railroad name and used one of the Monopoly railroads. A rather convoluted title, but there you are. The pattern is Short Line by Miss Rosie’s Quilt Co., published 2010. We saw a sample made at a local quilt shop last year and decided we all needed our own version. The most fun part is that it contains fabric from all of us. It has a “piano keys” border and I used leftover binding pieces for a scrappy binding.
I also pieced the back with large swathes of fabric, including leftover white from the front. The green is “Odds and Ends” by Julie Comstock of Cosmo Cricket for moda, pattern #37045 and features vintage alphabet letters. The red plaid is “Gingham Play” pattern #CX-7161 by Michael Miller Fabrics, and the red with tiny white triangles is “Chatterbox Aprons” by Mary Mulari for Penny Rose Fabrics C5465.
This quilt features a new element, which is my first attempt at free-motion quilting with my new babylock Jane machine. I practiced and practiced before I tried it and even though it has lots of problems, it really came out looking good. I did a dense pattern of straight and squiggly lines in the white streaks and that makes the colored streaks really pop. The open white triangle sections feature really dense stippling and the border has my favorite element: a daisy chain, courtesy of a video tutorial from Man Sewing. I really love how cute those flowers are, so another quilt needs to feature those all over! So here’s my Short Line, a tribute to scrappy fun!
