May found us working on more 6″x6″ blocks. I had a dental emergency and couldn’t attend one week at the last minute, so Terry and ShaRee spent the day cutting kits for these three blocks and then we sewed them up on subsequent weeks. It’s so nice to have supportive quilting buddies! They did a great job picking out fabrics.
Block #23 Double X was an easy block that came together quickly and straight. Hooray for those! A little bit of fussy-cutting on the center squares got us each a pop of red in the flowers. We were able to spend the rest of that sewing day cutting fabric for our other project, the America the Beautiful quilts. We like it when we can sew something already cut out and then prep for the future by cutting new blocks. It makes the cutting less tedious because we got to sew.

We are trying to keep an eye on the whole quilt when choosing fabrics for the individual blocks. We want a scrappy look and don’t want a section heavy on one color. So #24 Old Maid’s Puzzle has pink with a pop of black to tie in the black in other areas. We each have a stash of 30’s fabric in different colors and prints so when we decide on a color scheme, we all go to our boxes and start hauling out the appropriate colors. We mix and match and compare all the options until we have something we love. But sometimes one of us has a piece that we keep eyeing and wanting to find a reason to use. This is what happened with that darling pink and black print. We’ve brought it out over and over but it never quite worked, and when Terry packs it away we all look longingly at it. So we are jumping up and down with joy at finally using it in our quilts!!

#25 Gentleman’s Fancy turned out to be a headache for all three of us. When one of us has issues with a block we all feel bad and try to help out, but when all of us have issues we know it can’t be us. Right? The dimensions just did not want to work. Adding the side and top pieced strips to the middle square-in-square just did not line up. There was a lot of muttering and unpicking on this block and we were all glad to get it finished. ShaRee has a rule: Three strikes and you’re Out, meaning “I will sew a seam three times and then it is what it is”. We hate it when we have to invoke this rule because it means there’s been a lot of the aforementioned muttering and unpicking. But the blocks got done and packed in the boxes and we are glad, however, blocks like this make us despair for getting the top pieced together without stretching or adding sashing pieces. Grr.
