These are the first of the 6″x6″ blocks and a little variation in seam allowance on these small ones makes a big difference when they are all sewn together. We made Card Tricks on a day in late February then chose fabric and made kits for Dutchman’s Puzzle and Grandmother’s Choice. We sewed these up in April after everyone returned from being out of town on different weeks in March.
Block #20 Card Tricks was really fun and we went with a primary color scheme to offset so many of the large pastel blocks we have in the quilt so far. The block is easy but looks neat with the intersecting squares.

We wanted the center pinwheel on Block #21 Dutchman’s Puzzle to be the focal point, so we chose the dark blue fabric to make it stand out. Then each layer behind gets lighter and more subtle so that the effect is striking. For Block #22 Grandmother’s Choice, we wanted some black in the block but didn’t want it to be overpowering, so we went with the almost-solid polka dot center square to ground it in black. The black triangles have so much white print plus the flowers that the black is not really in the forefront and the red cornerstones make this a red and black block with a smaller dose of black.
