OK, I said I was trying to catch up on our progress, remember? So mid-summer we got these blocks done. Block #12 is 9″x9″, called Spools and we did it in the same color scheme as the pattern. We looked at it and said “no prob, we’ve made spool blocks before”. Then we looked at the pattern and realized that the four sides around the center squares aren’t pieced with a rectangle and triangles at each side but are all one piece. Yikes! The pattern instructions say to use a Y-seam construction, but not how to do it. Gulp! We’ve never done Y-seams. Besides the first reason that ShaRee likes the sampler and wanted to make it, one of the reasons for doing this quilt is to learn new skills. So we headed to the “university” of YouTube where all tutorial knowledge resides to find out how to make Y-seams. Fortunately Terry found a pretty good one that walked us through and after watching it a couple times, guess what? They aren’t as tough as advertised. (Full disclosure: it’s been over 6 weeks since we made these and I admit I have no idea how we did them, so apparently I need to do them a bunch of times before they become a solid item in my quilting arsenal). Anyway, we congratulated ourselves on how well we did them and how great they turned out. I was taking pictures of the blocks on the floor and Terry realized I had turned one of my spools the wrong way. Grrr! We had laid them all out on our design boards and checked each other and I still got mine sewed together wrong. What the? So I had to take mine home and fix it, but I waited a week to fix it so I could get unirritated and then it turned out lovely!

Block #13 is 9″x9″, called English Ivy, and we adhered to the pattern colors for this one, also. It is a similar block to Pieced Flowers & Diamond Lily with three quadrants of pieced flowers with appliqued stem & leaves in the fourth quadrant. It had large pieces and went together quite quickly with very little trouble. Wa-hoo! We have a variety of white patterned fabrics for the backgrounds on the blocks and we used the large polka dots for this one since there was so much background to show them off. ShaRee loves dots and has decreed that each block should have dots in some form and I think we have almost accomplished that so far. This one dots in the background, the large red square, the green triangle, and in the background of the small red triangles!
