I’m a little behind on posting because our 1930’s group has been busy working this summer, even with all the interruptions. I will try to get caught up with posts soon. Early in the summer we did these two blocks. Block #10 is called Flying Birds & Flowers and is a 9″x9″ block. The birds are the pieced triangle blocks and the flowers are obviously the applique flowers. We kept the pieced color scheme the same as the pattern but chose different flowers. The pattern called for a light and dark pink but we went for a bold violet and orange for more contrast with the backgrounds. We each have different preferences for the applique blanket stitch colors so our top stitching varies between each of us between lots of contrast and less contrast.
Block #11 is also a 9″x9″ and is called Odd Fellows Chain. We totally changed the color scheme from the violet, green & yellow of the pattern. I have to say it-this was a piecing nightmare. I mentioned that it is 9×9 so it’s a small block to begin with and the largest piece is the center square at 2 1/4″ finished. Um, yeah, it’s small. And it has 73 individual pieces to be sewn together into a 9″ square block that needs to line up, be square, and not pucker. It took us forever, we all unpicked ALOT, got headaches, grumbled, and were mighty glad when we got it accomplished. None of the individual piecing was difficult but they were mostly bias-cut triangles with stretch that made it tough to get our points lined up, which we did with various bits of success. All of mine will be cut off when I sew it to the neighboring blocks and it is the wonkiest. Sigh! Terry gets the award for straightness. You go, girl!
