In the last two weeks of group sewing, we made the last two barn blocks for the quilt. Last week’s block was the Summer Star block. This is the only “twinner” block we made. We both loved this barn and roof fabric and decided to use them. As we were looking at fabrics for the blocks on the side of the barn, we just found these fabrics that worked and decided to go the same and be twins. Because of the planning we did, this is probably the most harmonious of all the barns. Most of the wall blocks are independent of the barn fabrics, but this one all blends together. I took the photo alphabetically: Team ShaRee on the left and Team Sue on the right.
Yesterday we made the final block which is called Weathervane. We both used fabrics from a charm pack I had in my stash for our wall block and then used barn fabrics we had cut out at the very beginning of this project in January. Team ShaRee went with brights and that lovely black swirl for the roof sets everything off so nicely.
Team Sue went with a gray block and tied into the gray roof whose pattern suggests shingles. Overall, it’s a light value block and is a nice contrast with the other barns which are darker in value.
After sewing the blocks, we laid out all our barns on the floor and started digging through our respective stashes for the 2.5″ strip sashings for each block. They are varied and scrappy and colorful. We got all the sashings cut for the blocks but were worn out with matching so we will deal with the outer sashing border later. It may involve the purchase of small portions of fabric because we used everything we liked for this project that we already own.
Next step: start sewing sashing and putting the blocks together!
