I have several quilts in various stages of production but September brought two finishes which makes me very happy. For Scott’s birthday in February I gave him the kit for the BYU quilt, purchased from the Fabric Mill in Orem. I had seen that kit several times when visiting that store and thought it would be a good lap quilt for Scott. When they had all their kits on sale in February, I gave in to temptation. So I worked on the cutting and piecing during the summer and let Scott pick the layout of the blocks. Once they were sewed together he chose the backing which I interrupted with a vertical and horizontal row of leftover blocks. Then he went with me to Just Sew in Highland and chose the blue thread and machine quilting pattern of loops and swirls. I attached the binding just before we left for Arizona at the beginning of September and sewed in the car so that we could do a photo shoot in Phoenix and at Montezuma’s Well.
The quilt was made with “The Collegiate Quilt” pattern by BagLady Creations using a combination of fabrics and 55″x64″. Not all of the fabrics included had selvages but here are some of the fabrics: Pattern BYU045 and BYU020 by Sykel Ent. of Fabrique Innovations, Inc.; CX-4831 Mini Harlequin by Michael Miller Fabrics; Club House by Swirly Girls Design for Michael Miller Fabrics; Print D#BTT2582 by Robert Kaufman; Pattern C315 of 2015 Basics and Pattern C970 Houndstooth Basics by Riley Blake Designs; Pattern C435 and CC660 plus other fabrics from Riley Blake Designs.
I attended my first quilt retreat in January which was Quilt St. George and have been steadily working on several projects from that along with my own projects. So there are various quilts in process but this is the first completed quilt from retreat. It feels good to have one all the way finished. The pattern is “Beach Umbrellas” by Nellie J Designs and the striped hexagons look like a cluster of umbrellas at the beach when viewed from above. The pattern includes instructions for baby, throw, twin, and queen sizes and I did my own variation by making it between the baby and throw sizes. I learned some new techniques in this class using a new ruler that made sewing the hexies and matching the stripes much easier. I hand quilted it using free-hand loops with variegated blue thread. The gray background is a linen look shot cotton that calms down all the bright stripes. I pieced the backing using leftover stripes in squares, large strips of the border stripe, and a patterned gray. I like pieced backings.
