Monday was Decorating Day for this year’s Festival of Trees and we gathered to put together our tree and the space around it. Our theme this year is “Sugarplum Forest” and we did lots of candy. This was a reference to Paul being in “Hansel and Gretl” when he was in junior high and also to his penchant for stashing candy for future eating. There’s a tree, playhouse, bare branches with glitter and bows, and candy jars. It sold last night at the silent auction and will be going to Jim’s Family Restaurant in West Valley where they will display it and then raffle it off to a lucky customer. As always, our tree is on the east end of aisle C.

Festival of Trees 2011
This is the 12th year we have decorated a large tree in honor of Scott’s deceased brother, Paul, for the Festival of Trees which provides charity care for patients at Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Each year we have tried to pick a theme that had something to do with his interests, so this year we did a classical music tree and called it “Joy to the World”. We are in our customary spot on the east end of aisle C in space C-21, in honor of the planes he was flying when he died. We got it all decorated yesterday and it came out very nice. In addition to our family tree, the Fazulyanov’s did a small Fairy tree that’s very pink!

Festival of Trees 2010
Our extended Carey family does a tree every year for the Festival of Trees that benefits Primary Childrens Medical Center. We do it in honor of Scott’s brother, Paul, an Air Force pilot killed when his plane crashed in Alabama in 1995. This year our Carey tree was themed “Cookies and Cream” and we did snowmen and ice cream. It was black, white, and silver, with red accents. Christine made cookies and cream ice cream scoops out of play dough and Oreos to put in the ice cream dishes and Mom tested several brands of ice cream as she emptied out containers to put under the tree. You can click on a photo and see them larger in a gallery.
2008 Festival of Trees
Scott’s parents and siblings decorate a tree each year in honor of his brother, Paul, who died while on active duty in the Air Force. (You can see previous trees in our Archives.) All proceeds from the Festival of Trees goes to charity care at Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City. This year our theme was “Dance Under the Stars”, because Paul and Michelle met in a ballroom dance class at BYU. We made it a winter scene, so Santa and Mrs. Claus are having a dance outside in the garden in the snow. We had 3 trees, each decorated in a different color-purple, fuschia, and turqoise, an arch, garden bench, and lamppost. Here are some candids of the tree and the decorators.
Festival of Trees 2007
This year for our Festival of Tree tree we decided to have a music theme, since Paul loved music. We had an electric guitar, drum set, a bunch of 45 records, and an autographed CD from Melissa Etheridge (Melissa went to the same junior high and high school as we did and was Janice's age).
The Festival ends Saturday, December 1. Stop by our tree if you go (it is in Row C, space 21 and is called "Jingle Bell Rock").
